Nelson Angelil was a renowned Canadian music producer and songwriter. He is best known as the owner and chairman of the board of Nelstar Records and co-founder of the Nelson Music Group, which he sold to BMG in 1991. He has also produced albums for Celine Dion, Barbra Streisand, Whitney Houston, Neil Diamond, Diana Krall, Peter Gabriel, 14 other platinum-certified albums and 10 Grammy Awards. Nelson Angelil was born on December 3, 1947 in Ottawa, Canada. He is the twin brother of singer/actress Celine Dion and father of sons Rene-Charles and Nelson Daniel Jr. Angelil is also the father of Nelson Daniel III from his second marriage to Marie-Josée Thériault.
Angelil began his career as a backup drummer with singer Leif Garrett in the early 1970s. In 1978, he released his own album, called simply “Nelson”. The following year, he starred in the Canadian television series “Roc ensemble” alongside Celine Dion and her mother Adrienne Clarkson. In 1981, Angelil married Dion’s mother and they had two sons: Rene-Charles (born 1984) and Nelson Daniel Jr. (born 1988).
Between 1990 and 1992, Angelil hosted the Canadian variety show “The New Music Express”. From 1993 to 1995 he starred in the Quebec television series “Eddy”, which was cancelled after only five episodes due to low ratings. In 2003, he reunited with Dion for an appearance on her television special “A New Day…For Me”.

Nelson Angelil, the son of Celine Dion and René Angélil, died on January 14th after a long battle with leukemia. He was just 56 years old. Nelson was originally diagnosed with leukemia in 2006 and had a successful stem cell transplant in 2010. Unfortunately, the cancer returned in December of last year and he passed away just days after his final chemotherapy treatment.
Nelson was known for his twin brother Eddy Angelil’s contributions to music. Eddy is best known as the co-founder and guitarist for singer Shania Twain’s band. The two brothers were very close and often collaborated on projects together. Nelson also worked as a musician, most notably as a member of Celine Dion’s backup band from 2003-2011.
